Things to Consider Before Buying a Sofa

Buying a sofa for your home should be carefully chosen for a number of reasons, like how you are going to be using it and which style best fits the room. You want your sofa to last for a number of years, so it's important to shop around and learn about the quality before you purchase one.

Here are 3 things to consider:

How will you use your sofa? How you plan to use your sofa determines the rest of the features you need. So, how will you be using it? For everyday activities such as reading, relaxing, and watching TV? Or will it be used only once in a while for formal settings?

Who will be using it? You want your sofa to be a good fit for whoever will be using it most. For example, if it's for a very tall person, use deep seating. For someone with bad knees, use shallow seating and a tight back.

No matter what type of sofa you get, it's always best to try before you buy!

Determine Size There's nothing worse than buying a piece of furniture for it to not fit in it's designated space, or even through the front door! So, before you purchase anything, measure up and make sure the dimensions suit the space as well as the doors, hallways and stairways that it will have to pass through.

Fabric Selecting the right fabric will keep your sofa looking at its best:

  • Use high maintenance fabrics, like silk, only in areas that are used infrequently.

  • Use easy to clean microfibers in heavy usage areas.

  • Textured fabrics show less wear and tear

  • Use leather if you're looking for longevity.

Also keep in mind if you have pets. If so, opt for fabric that's easy to clean and consider loose, washable sofa covers.

Quality If you want to enjoy your sofa for years to come, you'll want to make sure you're buying a quality piece:

  • A good quality sofa will be heavier because of its sturdy frame.

  • The legs will not screw off and on.

  • The cushion will retain its shape

  • Make sure the back doesn't feel hollow as it's a sign of inferior construction.

Cost Expect to pay anywhere from $500-$2,500 for a basic sofa. Visit the clearance floor if you're on a tight budget, you may find a great piece!
