Garage Organization Tips
Updated: May 25, 2022
A garage is a great place for storage, workshops, extra space and keeping your cars nice. It’s also really easy to collect excess clutter or allow your garage to become unorganized. Here are some ideas on how to organize your garage so it can serve multifunctional purposes while feeling clean and spacious.
Clean your garage!
First you will want to clean your out your garage so you know how much space you are working with. Having a clear space will help you choose the right way to organize so it can be as functional as possible. While you are cleaning out the clutter in your garage, sort out which items need to be thrown away or donated. This will help you free up some space.
Are the floors and walls how you want them? Many storage methods for garages include shelving and hanging things on the wall which exposes a large portion of the ground. While your garage is empty, it is the perfect time to paint, upgrade your flooring and add rugs if needed.
Garage Shelving Ideas
Garage shelving comes in a variety of different styles, heights and materials. First you will want to consider the materials that your shelves are made out of. You can choose from a variety of different shelving options such as steel, wood, metal, plastic and more. The shelving materials should depend on what you choose to store on the shelf. For example, if you are wanting to store heavy power tool equipment, you will want a sturdier shelf. If you are looking to store light weight holiday decorations, you could go with a less sturdy option.
Next, you will want to consider the style of shelving. You can choose anything from open shelving, closed shelving or even shelving that is mounted on the ceiling. Open shelving is great for easy access and minimal storage such as boxes, toys or equipment. Closed shelving is great for items that need to stay clean or to decrease the amount of clutter that is visible. Ceiling shelves work great for items that you only use once or twice a year.

Garage Storage Rack Ideas
Garage storage racks are bars, wires or pegs that are typically used with horizontal shelving. They should be installed at safe heights and with convenience in mind. One tip when buying storage racks for your garage is to make sure that they have adjustable shelves. This will allow you to change the height of the shelving based on the items you put on each level. Similar to garage shelving, storage racks can also be installed overhead. If you have luggage, seasonal items or items that need to stay dry, ceiling racks are a great way to go. Keep your household in mind. If you have a large family, adding multiple bike racks to clear some floor space might be ideal. If you play sports, adding utility racks designed to hold sports equipment could work better for you. The benefit of installing garage storage racks is that they can be personalized to fit the needs of each individual.

Pegboards & Tool Chests
A peg board comes to great use in any garage. It’s often an overlooked addition, but it’s very versatile and a go-to choice if you are looking to keep things neat and organized. Pegboards feature pre-drilled holes designed to hold most power tools. It can also add a splash of contrast to the walls in your garage. Before you hang up a pegboard, you should cut it down to size so it fits nicely in your garage. When installing, be sure to provide room behind the board for the foot of the hooks. Add hooks and holders in order to hang up your tools as needed.

Typically a tool chest will go with a pegboard. Tool chests provides additional storage and is a functional storage option for people who are handy or always taking on new building projects.
